The Key to the Future Each year more than a half million U.S. students drop out before earning their high school diplomas. Studies show dropouts earn a median annual income of $14,000 for their lifetime, and are much more likely to be incarcerated and in poor health. Youth in distressed urban and rural communities are surrounded by crippling poverty-fueled issues: gang violence, drug and alcohol abuse, violent crime, teen pregnancy. Issues that can lead to their destruction. However, throughout the country, dedicated teachers aren’t willing to just let this happen. With World Vision’s help, they provide incentives for them to work hard and they encourage their students to dream and set goals. |

Noemi Cortez, fifth grade teacher, felt it was important for her to return to teach in her old neighborhood. She worries that too little has changed since she was a girl and she worries about the gang violence. She tells her students:“You can be whatever you want to be.” But she does not offer a smooth ride for them. She reminds them they must know where they are heading. They will face challenges. “How will you achieve your goals?” she asks. |
