Most southern towns historically have had one thing in common; a set of railroad tracks often divided them, economically and racially. There often was a spiritual separation too. The subtle but strong message was that one side of town was good and the other bad. Jesus Christ has never let such artificial barriers stop Him. For Him, there has never been a good or bad side of the tracks -- just people in need of His saving love. Mendenhall, Mississippi, is no exception.
Mendenhall is located in Simpson County in the south central part of Mississippi. It has a long history with deep roots in the struggle against poverty and injustice and while progress is being made there is still a long way to go. Current statistical data shows a poverty rate for families of 23.6% and a child poverty rate of 33.0% (as compared to the national poverty rate in 2007 of 9.8%). Great need still exists surrounding challenges of poor housing, segregated education, lack of employment opportunities, and more.
Today, and for the last 35 years, the Mendenhall Bible Church (MBC) and its outreach arm, The Mendenhall Ministries (TMM), have crossed artificial economic, spiritual, and racial barriers in rural Mississippi with a message of hope rooted in biblical reconciliation and personal responsibility. MBC reaches the poor and non-Christians in Jesus' name, while giving many from Mississippi and around the nation a chance to glimpse with God's eyes, life on the other side of the tracks.
MBC responds to the needs of low-income persons in Mendenhall and Simpson County for education through Genesis One Christian School (GOCS). It is an advocate for those who cannot speak up for themselves. The Ministry reaches out to the poorest of the poor with quality housing through its church-based, nationwide network of volunteers.
