Green River Valley Flood Watch

Donate to help survivors of disasters in the United States.
The Green River Valley south of Seattle continues to brace for winter storms that could bring historic floods to this highly populated area. World Vision is ready to respond if residents are forced to evacuate due to severe flooding.

GRVbd0588-07cc.jpgLast January’s heavy rains weakened the abutment to Howard Hanson Dam, which prevents flooding in the valley. Dam experts are predicting winter rains could cause catastrophic flooding during the rainy season.

In November, anxieties about potential flooding eased when U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announce it had completed a temporary fix that reduces the chance of flooding. However, those who live or work in the flatlands of the Green River Valley remain at risk.

Until the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers can make permanent repairs to the earthen structure, the corps must limit the amount of flood water it stores behind the dam. That means letting water flow down the spillway and potentially flooding the valley down river if heavy and prolonged rains occur.

The valley is home to some 350,000 residents and many farms. The valley floor also has miles of malls, warehouses, and businesses, including Boeing’s Space Center, Recreational Equipment Inc.’s headquarters, and Starbucks’ regional roasting plant.

Months before flood season arrived in Western Washington, government officials were declaring a state of emergency. If a flood like last January’s snow melt recurs, the valley is still likely to experience serious flooding. “The message is to remain prepared,” says Col. Anthony Wright of the Army Corps.

World Vision Positioned to Respond
World Vision is partnering with local churches and organizations preparing to shelter displaced families. These families are expected to be those that can’t afford to stay in other lodging, so their needs will be significant.

The Red Cross estimates up to 6,000 people could need shelter if flooding occurs.
World Vision will supply essentials to the most vulnerable families, such as personal hygiene items, blankets, and pillows. We also will continue to care for families as they return home, providing cleaning supplies and other recovery items.

As the rainy season approaches, government officials are encouraging valley residents to not become complacent. King County, which includes the Green River Valley, is urging residents to buy flood insurance, have emergency kits on hand, plan for evacuation, and be ready to relocate animals and livestock.

Businesses also are planning for potential flooding. Boeing has erected an 8-foot-high sandbag wall around its Space Center. An additional 40 miles of sandbag levees have been raised to keep the Green River from jumping its banks.

The flood risk is expected to persist for several years—the time estimated for repairs to be completed on the Howard Hanson Dam.
